Flu Q & A

What is the flu?

The flu is a common respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. It might go away on its own with mild to moderate symptoms or become severe, even dangerous in some cases.

The flu commonly appears during the winter months, with the highest number of cases occurring between December and February. The flu is the most common infectious disease.

What are the symptoms of the flu?

Symptoms that the flu can cause include:

  • Fever
  • Headaches
  • Body aches
  • Sore throat
  • Coughing
  • Runny nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Chills

You might also experience vomiting and/or diarrhea, though these symptoms are more common among children with the flu.

After being infected with the flu, symptoms usually appear within 1-4 days.

What are the risk factors for the flu?

Your risk of contracting the flu or experiencing severe symptoms includes:

  • Having asthma or another lung disease
  • History of heart disease, diabetes, or other chronic diseases
  • Blood disorders
  • Weakened immune system
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Being an older adult or a young child

The flu can spread from person to person via sneezing, coughing, talking, touching shared surfaces, or sharing personal items with someone infected with the flu.

Touching your face, eyes, nose, or mouth might transfer flu germs into your body. You can also inhale germs through airborne droplets.

How is the flu diagnosed?

Dr. Smith meets with you in person or virtually to discuss your medical history, symptoms, and lifestyle habits. KC Cares Med offers flu tests that might use a nasal swab to determine if you have the flu or another illness.

How is the flu treated?

Your flu treatment plan might consist of:

  • Rest and fluids
  • Intravenous (IV) fluids
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Prescription medications
  • Nasal sprays
  • Injections

You might begin feeling better within a few days to a week, but call KC Cares Med if you develop new or worsening symptoms. Dr. Smith may refer you to a hospital if you have severe symptoms that are not managed well with home remedies or prescription medications.

Possible flu complications include ear infections, sinus infections, pneumonia, and similar concerns. Call KC Cares Med if you develop new or worsening symptoms.

The flu vaccine helps reduce your risk of contracting the flu and lowers the chance of severe symptoms. It’s helpful to wash your hands often, avoid touching your face with your hands, and keep a safe distance from other people exhibiting flu symptoms.
