Rashes Q & A

What are rashes?

A rash is a change in your skin that can cause itching, inflammation, or redness. Rashes can occur due to irritants, infections, allergies, or underlying skin conditions.

Almost everyone develops a rash at one time or another. However, some people are more susceptible to them due to genetics or allergies.

What are some common skin rashes?

Dr. Smith treats several types of skin rashes, including:

Contact dermatitis

This type of rash develops when your body comes into contact with something it doesn’t like. Common causes of contact dermatitis include soaps, detergents, metals, and poison ivy.

Eczema

Also called atopic dermatitis, this rash often develops during infancy. It tends to run in families and is common among people with allergies or asthma.

Hives

This rash is known for causing itchy, red skin welts. Hives can occur due to allergic reactions, insect bites, or physical triggers, such as significant temperature changes.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic condition that causes patches of thick, scaly skin. It can form anywhere, but most commonly affects the elbows, knees, and scalp.

How are rashes diagnosed?

Dr. Smith reviews your health history and asks about your symptoms, including when the rash first formed, what it feels like, and if it has spread from its original location. Tell him if you’ve been diagnosed with allergies or a chronic condition, like psoriasis.

Next, Dr. Smith completes an exam, examining your skin and the rash. He may suggest testing, such as allergy testing.

Some rashes can be diagnosed via telehealth, but if Dr. Smith suspects an underlying condition that requires further evaluation, you may need an in-office appointment.

How are rashes treated?

Treatment of rashes depends on the type and severity of your symptoms. Dr. Smith may recommend:

  • Allergy medications
  • Anti-inflammatory creams
  • Immunosuppressants
  • Oatmeal baths
  • Oral or topical steroids
  • Topical immunomodulators to reduce inflammation and help manage certain skin conditions

Some people benefit from several treatments. The goal is to reduce uncomfortable symptoms and clear your skin.
