Each year, more than 10 million Americans visit the doctor for treatment of a urinary tract infection (UTI). Anyone can experience a UTI, but they commonly affect women. At KC Cares Med, virtual urgent care specialist Gregory Smith, MD, offers complete care for UTIs via telemedicine. If you live in Sacramento, California, and think you may have one, make an in-person or telehealth appointment by calling the office or booking online today.
A urinary tract infection happens when bacteria –– microscopic, single-celled organisms –– enter your urinary system. This can lead to inflammation and other uncomfortable symptoms. Your urinary system includes your urethra, bladder, kidneys, and ureters.
UTIs are particularly common in women because of anatomy. Since a woman’s urethra is near the anus, bacteria such as E. Coli can enter the urinary system more easily and cause an infection.
Symptoms of a urinary tract infection include:
You may also experience pressure or pain in your pelvis or abdominal pain, depending on the location and severity of the infection.
Dr. Smith reviews your health history and asks about your symptoms, including when they first started, whether they’ve worsened over the last few days, and if your urine looks cloudy or bloody. Tell him if you have a history of urinary tract infections, as some people are susceptible to recurrent UTIs.
Dr. Smith may have you provide a urine sample for testing to confirm a UTI and determine the type of bacteria causing your infection. Once he receives your test results, he makes personalized treatment recommendations.
Treatment for urinary tract infections depends on the type of infection you have and how severe it is.
For minor UTIs, Dr. Smith typically prescribes an antibiotic, such as trimethoprim or fosfomycin. For more severe UTIs, especially those affecting the kidneys, he may prescribe a different antibiotic or additional medical care.
If you regularly experience UTIs, Dr. Smith may also recommend lifestyle changes. For example, drinking plenty of fluids, particularly water, can help dilute your urine. You may also benefit from topical estrogen therapy if you are perimenopausal or menopausal, or from avoiding feminine hygiene products that can irritate your skin.
