Sinus Infections Q & A

What is a sinus infection?

A sinus infection, sometimes called sinusitis, is inflammation (swelling) of the tissues that line your sinuses. The sinuses are small air-filled pockets behind your eyes and nose that produce mucus and humidify the air you breathe.

There are several types of sinus infections, but the two most common are:

Acute sinusitis

This type is typically caused by the common cold and lasts a few weeks. Common symptoms include facial pressure, nasal congestion, and headaches.

Chronic sinusitis

This type lasts for at least 12 weeks and is typically caused by persistent inflammation in the sinuses.

What symptoms are common with a sinus infection?

Sinus infection symptoms include:

  • Stuffy nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Pressure in your ears or behind your nose
  • Fever
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

Some people experience only a few of these symptoms, while others experience several.

How is a sinus infection diagnosed?

Dr. Smith reviews your health history and asks about your symptoms, including when they started, whether they’ve changed, and if they affect daily activities such as eating or breathing.

He then completes an exam, looking at your cheeks, eyes, and forehead for signs of swelling and redness. Dr. Smith may also ask you to gently press on your upper cheeks or the bridge of your nose to identify sensitive areas. If necessary, he may also refer you for additional testing to rule out other conditions or an X-ray of your sinus cavities.

How is a sinus infection treated?

Treatment of a sinus infection depends on the severity of your symptoms and the underlying cause. Dr. Smith may suggest:

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers
  • OTC cold or allergy medications
  • Nasal saline rinses
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Prescription antibiotics
  • Oral or topical decongestants
  • Prescription steroid sprays

Many people benefit from a combination of treatments and begin to see their symptoms improve as they recover. However, if your symptoms persist, worsen, or recur, more specialized care may be necessary. For optimal results, follow Dr. Smith’s instructions and take any medication as prescribed.
